A Cat Tail Thanksgiving

...............

Buttons the Cat never paid a bit of attention to holidays. She
spent her younger days with the Little Girl. When holidays
came Buttons found a quite place to nap. People would come
and go and there was lots of good food to eat. That, in a nut
shell, is all Buttons knew about Thanksgiving. The owners of
the Antique store are always so busy. The holidays seem to
come and go and it's just not the same as it was when Buttons
was young. The Little Girl is gone, so Thanksgiving is now
just a memory. Buttons decided to find out what Thanksgiving
was all about.

What  better place to start this adventure than the river.

The weather is getting cool and the river looks so
cold. Buttons was not sure she would find anyone on the
river bank.

She was very surprised to find two children near the bank.
"What are you two doing", said Buttons. We are trying to
figure out this map. We want to go to our Grandmothers
home for Thanksgiving.

"You see, its getting late", said another little girl.
We must hurry. So Buttons and the children began
their walk to find Grandmother's house.

Before long, they met a girl with two geese.

My, what fine geese. "What are doing on the trail", asked Buttons

" I am trying to get them to follow me to my Grandmothers
house", said the little girl. " Well if you would stop giving them
so many crumbs, and walk fast, they will follow, said Bottoms.
That's just what they did.

Soon the group came upon a boy in a tall tree. "What are
you going up there", asked Buttons. "I am waiting for my ride",
said the little boy. "Nothing can go through these woods",
said Buttons.

"Yes it can, and here she comes now."

The children were amazed. It was the biggest elephant
any of them had ever seen. "Climb on and she will get
us to the other side of the forest",  said the little boy.

The forest was indeed very thick and all of
the children were very grateful for the ride.

In no time at all the group were at the forest edge. Thank you
Effie. Effie was the elephants name. Effie promised to meet the
group at sun down and return them safely home. Effie then
headed back into the forest as she had lots more people to deliver
home for Thanksgiving. Finally the group made their way to the little
boys Grandmother's house.

Aunt Isabel was waiting for the children.

I am so happy to see all of you. Do come in.
I am glad to see you have brought friends.

This way to the sitting room, if you please.

Do sit down and make yourselves comfortable.

If you will excuse me, I must help set the table. The girl went off
to the kitchen. All of the children had offered to help, as all good
children should do, but the girl declined the offer. "I am sure you
are all very tired from your trip", said the girl. We will eat soon.

We could see the table. It was set with the most wonderful dishes.

Once they were in place, we all knew dinner would soon be served.

Dinner was indeed wonderful. There was fresh roasted turkey, dressing,
garden peas, mashed potatoes, gravy, salad and pumpkin pie. I loved
this visit. The Antique Store Owners were not having a Thanksgiving
dinner this year. I am so happy I took this trip. I have met so many new friends. We were all to full to soon. The sun was now beginning to
slowly drop in the fall sky. We must be going home.

Aunt Claire thanked all of us for coming. Thanksgiving is a time to
share. All are welcome. Next year, if you have no place to celebrate
Thanksgiving, please come back. "Thank You" said Buttons and the
children. This will be a thanksgiving we will always remember.
The children went outside and gathered the geese and began to try
and figure out which way they needed to go to get back home.
Suddenly a little girl walked up to the children and Buttons and said
"My name is Jumeau. Effie is just inside the bush and is ready to take
you back. I am going with you as I have also been at my Grandmothers home. Every year sweet Efffie takes me there and back . "

So Jumeau put on her bonnet,

and in no time we were back home.

I will leave you here and continue on to my home. I am so glad we
were able to meet. Buttons, you are the sweetest cat I have ever met. I hope we can meet again. "Thank you" said Buttons." I enjoyed my trip to Grandmothers also. Perhaps we can go again next year. You remind me of
a little girl I knew so long ago." Buttons said good bye to the children and their geese and thanked Effie and everyone went their separate ways. Buttons was so full and tired. As the sun set, it seemed to be just the right time to slip into the house and go to sleep. She will dream of the new friends she made and the wonderful trip. This will be remembered as one
of her best Thanksgivings. Only one thing would have made it better. If
only the little girl, the little girl of her past, could have gone with her.

As the children left, they began singing
Over the river and through the woods, to Grandmothers
house we go. What a wonderful day I had.

Love, Buttons
