Buttons the Cat, now middle aged, was resigned to the fact that winter
had
come again. Winter is usually a slower time of year. People just
seem to be
nicer in the middle of December. There was one thing that Buttons
did NOT
understand. Why were people nicer around this Holiday called Christmas.
Buttons knew about the wonderful decorations, and she knew about
all the
shopping that was done just before the big day. She saw first hand,
people
coming in to the Antique store looking for just the right gift.
But Why?
Where did this good feeling come from.
Buttons decided she should perhaps find out the answers to
her questions. The Owners of the Antique Store were very busy
and did not even miss her as she slipped out the back door.
Buttons forgot she had on her usual Christmas hat. The Little
Girl of her past used to dress her up. The Antique Store owners
thought it would be good for business, to see a cat in the Christmas
mood. The whole trouble of it, thought Buttons, is I don't know
what that
feeling is. As she stepped out of the back door, the sun was warm.
Buttons
thought what a wonderful place to NAP and to ponder her latest question.
As Buttons was just about asleep, one of her best friends appeared.
It was Oliver. A very nice dog from a sweet family that lived down
the
street.
"That is a very nice hat", said Oliver. "You really look like you
are
in the Christmas mood."
"Thank You Oliver", said Buttons. Now you have hit on my latest
problem.
"What do you mean", said Oliver.
What do you mean by the Christmas mood. What is this special feeling
everyone talks about, that comes at Christmas?
"Oh, that's easy to answer. You can learn the same way I did. If
you stay
here, and wait you will see. Just be very quiet and don't move from
this spot.
said Oliver.
"Can you stay with me? No Buttons, my Master will be very worried.
I must go
now. With that, Olive went home. Very soon, Buttons was sound asleep.
The next thing Buttons knew, she was flying through the sky in a
sleigh.
Buttons was riding with Santa Clause. They were going very fast,
but Buttons
could see very clearly.
Buttons was so excited to be going on this trip.
After all the Store Owners would never miss her.

In the Northwest, Buttons saw parents doing last minute shopping.

As Santa turned the sleigh toward the Northwest, Buttons saw families
gathering the children to come in and wash their hands and face.

It was now quite dark. The sleigh slowed and Buttons was able to see in a big picture window. The children were singing and every one was so happy. Buttons could smell the wonderful food that was being placed at the table. Soon, both friends and family would sit down to a great celebration.
Family, friends, special gifts, wonderful food, special music.
Remembering the Christmases of long ago. Seeing family
you have not seen in long time. It is a special time to
remember family who are no longer here.
Suddenly, Buttons covered her eyes. She did not want Santa Clause
to see
the tear that was running down her cheek. She closed her eyes and
curled
up in a little black fuzzy ball. The truth is, now Buttons
missed her family very
much. Perhaps the Little Girl will come home. What if she missed
her. Buttons
began to remember the special little treats she always got at Christmas.
There
was the Christmas tree. Buttons began to remember all these things.
She missed her family so much. Soon Buttons had cried herself to
sleep.
Santa flew on,
and on,
and on.
Then, all of the sudden, Buttons felt a bump.
Buttons found herself in her home.
By her own Christmas tree.
Beside the tree, set this small globe.
There was a note attached. It read,
" For Buttons. You have always had the Christmas Spirit
You love your family, and miss the Christmases of Long ago. You
are always
kind to others, and give love to all you meet. You are a Very
Special Cat."
Merry Christmas
Love,
Buttons could not wait to tell Oliver.
Soon, Buttons heard the family coming home.
It's Christmas Eve.
Instead of pretending to be asleep, as she usually does,
Buttons went to the door to Great them.
...............
Merry Christmas to All
(even the Mouse)
and to all A Good Night.
Love,
Buttons the Cat
